It seems that the world is holding anxiety these days. Regardless of who you have or are voting for, there seems to be a curiosity, anxiety and uncertainty of what lies ahead (election, coronavirus, life, etc) all bundled up like a tangled up wad of yarn.
But the important thing right now, is to (if you haven’t already) to pause and ask yourself,
how will I practice some self-care this week? what will I do today that is life-giving?
How will I remain grounded, centered and simply allow myself to be this week?
Me? I wake up early each morning, make my coffee, then Zeke and I sit curled up in the chair to begin the day with some quiet reflective readings, prayers and reminders of God’s presence and God at work in this world. Then this week, we are committed to going for a walk each morning (yes, it was chilly this morning!)
I’ve also decided to take it easy on social media, only listen to the news in the morning and check in on the news in the evening, while checking in with some friends and family as well.
A few weeks ago, I purchased at random, an amaryllis plant. I had no idea it would choose this week to bloom! And bloom it is! A reminder of beauty that can spring up and push through the dirt.
I think on my walks this week, I will look up and around at the beauty of God’s handiwork revealed through creation!
What will you do each day to practice some self care? Maybe you might consider:
- a quiet reading of scripture with your cup of tea or coffee?
- a morning or midday walk?
- a check in phone conversation with a friend or family member?
- is it time for some exercise?
- do you need to turn off the television or news for a while and read a good book!?
- maybe cook a delicious meal, listening to some good music while you cook
I have found that when I am grounded, when I have practiced better self-care, I’m more patient, at ease and kinder.
Here’s a few grounding scripture readings I share with you, of course any Psalm is good to read as well! But here are just a few for today:
But you, Israel, my servant,
Jacob, whom I have chosen,
the offspring of Abraham, my friend;
9 you whom I took from the ends of the earth,
and called from its farthest corners,
saying to you, “You are my servant,
I have chosen you and not cast you off”;
10 do not fear, for I am with you,
do not be afraid, for I am your God;
I will strengthen you, I will help you,
I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.
John 14:27 (but really, take some time to read the entire chapter)
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.
Be strong and bold; have no fear or dread of them, because it is the Lord your God who goes with you; he will not fail you or forsake you.”
The Lord, your God, is in your midst,
a warrior who gives victory;
he will rejoice over you with gladness,
he will renew you in his love;
he will exult over you with loud singing
Which Psalms? The following ones come to mind to name a few
23, 27, 55, 118, 121, and 139
Friends, be kind to yourself this week!
Know that you are being held in prayer today and always.
May the peace of Christ be with you today and always, amen.
