Readings for June 4, 2020

Here are your readings for the day. They come in two forms… a written form and audio form… you are invited to read or listen as best fits what you need for today. Be well, stay home, stay safe and go wash your hands, and if you must go out…wear your mask!

As you read or listen, you are invited to breathe in … and out. Settle in and listen to God’s Word. What is it that you hear today? How is God speaking to you today? What word or phrase jumps out at you… allow yourself to sit with this word or phrase and take it with you throughout the day, letting your heart respond to God in prayer. May your heart be nourished and grounded for today.

Psalm 118:1-9

O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
    his steadfast love endures forever!

Let Israel say,
    “His steadfast love endures forever.”
Let the house of Aaron say,
    “His steadfast love endures forever.”
Let those who fear the Lord say,
    “His steadfast love endures forever.”

Out of my distress I called on the Lord;
    the Lord answered me and set me in a broad place.
With the Lord on my side I do not fear.
    What can mortals do to me?
The Lord is on my side to help me;
    I shall look in triumph on those who hate me.
It is better to take refuge in the Lord
    than to put confidence in mortals.
It is better to take refuge in the Lord
    than to put confidence in princes.

Acts 4:23-24a, 29-31

After they were released, they went to their friends and reported what the chief priests and the elders had said to them. When they heard it, they raised their voices together to God and said, “Sovereign Lord, who made the heaven and the earth, the sea, and everything in them,

And now, Lord, look at their threats, and grant to your servants to speak your word with all boldness, while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” When they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God with boldness.

FSConnect Prayers for the Day:

On Thursday, the Fair Street Nursery School will be celebrating the FSNS Graduating Class of 2020 as they have wrapped up their year of learning! If you know one of the teachers or students, send them a note to celebrate this accomplishment!

Prayer for the Day*:

Listening God, you invite us to pray, to call on you and change our world. How bored you must be with our sometimes safe and harmless prayers. Saturate our lives with the Holy Spirit so that we know what to pray, who to pray for, and how best to pray. Holy Spirit, shake up the ways we pray, quickening our hearings and expanding our expectations so that we may live our faith more boldy. Amen.

*Today’s prayer is taken from Westminster Larger Confession Q&A182 as written in Seeking God’s Face, Praying with the Bible through the Year.

May the peace of Christ be with you today and always, amen.
