Readings for May 4, 2020

May 4, 2020 Audio: Psalm 87, John 10:7-13, Prayer

Here are your readings for the day. They come in two forms… a written form and audio form… you are invited to read or listen as best fits what you need for today. Be well, stay home, stay safe and go wash your hands, and if you must go out…wear your mask!

As you read or listen, you are invited to breathe in … and out. Settle in and listen to God’s Word. Reminding yourself that you are in God’s presence, as you listen or read ponder and reflect on what connects with your heart or mind. Pray to God what has moved you today, turn your thoughts to God and enjoy spending time with God. May your heart be nourished and grounded for today.

Psalm 87

Of the Korahites. A Psalm. A Song.

On the holy mount stands the city he founded;
    the Lord loves the gates of Zion
    more than all the dwellings of Jacob.
Glorious things are spoken of you,
    O city of God. Selah

Among those who know me I mention Rahab and Babylon;
    Philistia too, and Tyre, with Ethiopia—
    “This one was born there,” they say.

And of Zion it shall be said,
    “This one and that one were born in it”;
    for the Most High himself will establish it.
The Lord records, as he registers the peoples,
    “This one was born there.” Selah

Singers and dancers alike say,
    “All my springs are in you.”

John 10:7-13

So again Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and bandits; but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The hired hand, who is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away—and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. The hired hand runs away because a hired hand does not care for the sheep.

FSConnect Prayer of the Day:

Pray for the many students who are graduating this year knowing their celebrations will look different than they had hoped.  If you have someone in your family graduating this year, please let the church office know. If you have someone who is graduating, send them a note and let them know you are praying for them.

Prayers for the day*:

Shepherding God, if left to me, my faith would flounder and I would undoubtedly be lost and wandering. Thank you that my salvation rests on your undeserving mercy and unfailing promises. I am kept and protected because you have laid down your life for me. amen.

*Today’s prayer is taken from Canons of Dort 5.8 as written in Seeking God’s Face, Praying with the Bible through the Year.

May the peace of Christ be with you today and always, amen.
